It was mid-November of last year when it happened. Fall was starting to turn into winter, the holidays were approaching, Christmas lights were popping up throughout neighborhoods, and all around the world, adult women were frantically asking each other: Hey, um…is it okay to like Justin Bieber?!
Considering today is Justin Bieber’s birthday (HBD, Biebs!) we thought we’d take the opportunity to come out of the proverbial Belieber closet and shout our love from the rooftops.
Thanks to Bieber’s latest album, Purpose, which was released on November 13, 2015, there has been a noticeable shift in the demographic of his fan base. We’re not sure what caused this to happen – was it the catchy, new sound, or his prior collaboration with Diplo and Skillrex? Was it because of the simultaneous growth in our love for Selena Gomez’s new music? Or was it simply the album cover of Purpose, which caused late-millennial women to panic: “Wait a sec, am I a total creep for thinking Bieber is kind of hot now?”
Because we were full-fledged adults when Bieber rose to his teenage fame, it’s understandable to feel icky for wanting to comment with heart-eye emojis on his Instagram feed.
When he was rocking the floppy side bangs and singing “Baby,” we were already paying bills and voting in presidential elections. He was a legit child when we were out in the real world, and now all of a sudden, he’s in the real world with us. In a weird way, it almost feels like we stopped aging, and he’s just caught up.
That’s probably just a testament to the fact that his newer music is more relatable than his earlier hits. “Love Yourself,” with its Ed Sheeran influences, is kind of the epitome of this new wave of Bieber. It’s more mature sounding, with lyrics that actually make sense in the context of real relationships, and it’s the perfect one-woman-concert jam for when you’re stuck in traffic. (Who hasn’t turned up the dial and tried to create some crazy vocal riffs on that instrumental part?)
And if there was even the slightest doubt about our newfound love for the Biebs, any trace of skepticism was definitely washed away with his new leaked song, “Oh Girl.” (Free idea- can someone make a slideshow of those Ryan Gosling “Hey Girl” memes with “Oh Girl” playing in the background?)
So, it’s official, from Timberlake at 13 to Bieber at 30, it seems like our love for Justin is here to stay. And we’re no longer afraid to admit the fact that we are fully grown, mature, adults who are also Beliebers. We figure, if Jenna Dewan Tatum (who arguably makes up 1/2 of Hollywood’s hottest couple) can talk about fangirling out over the Biebs, why shouldn’t we?
Happy birthday, Justin. Stay fabulous.
