Ways To Stay Cool – And Look Chic – During A Summer Heat Wave

As the colder days of winter begin to melt away, it is time to prepare for the long days – and nights – of summer. Here are three chic ways to stay stylish and cool as the mercury slowly begins to rise. 

Setting Spray



I know how hard you worked on creating that perfect cat-eye and blending in your eyeshadow onto the creases of your lids this morning. And given all your diligence and artistry, I feel as if you deserve to have that perfectly highlighted cheek on full display from brunch, to museum, to happy hour, and whenever else those vibrant summer days take you.

Unfortunately, the high heat and humidity may try to stifle your plans for success. And that is where setting spray comes to the rescue! Long used by pageant queens and megastars to help their flawless makeup last the harsh lights of the stage, setting spray is quick trick to help your makeup last all day. Brands such as E.L.F., Urban Decay, Clarins, MAC Cosmetics, and Make Up For Ever all offer their version of a setting spray – meaning there is setting spray that will work for you regardless of skin type, brand preference, or price point.

My personal favorite is NYX Matte Finish Makeup Setting Spray. It keeps the shine from my oily skin to a minimum whilst making sure my under eye concealer lasts all day (If you have more dry skin, NYX Dewy Finish Makeup Setting Spray may be a better fit for you).


The perfect marriage: Loose Blouses + Dresses


No one wants to be encumbered by hot fabrics on those warm summer days. Flowing skirts, breezy tanks, linen dresses, textured tunics, and light cotton t-shirts will float away from your body to ensure you stay cool while looking great.

These items can easily be dressed up with your favorite platform wedges (because it’s too hot to be uncomfortable in sandal stilettos) or dressed down with those leopard lace up espadrilles you’ve been waiting to wear out since last October. Add your favorite sunglasses and sandals and you are set for the day!

Hydration, Hydration, Hydration


Longer days and warmer weather usually equates to tons more picnics, sunbathing, museum trips, concerts, and rooftop happy hours. While you’re taking advantage of the sun and gallivanting about town, it’s important to make sure you stay hydrated.

When you’re properly hydrated, you’ll stay energized, your skin will be more radiant, and it can even help improve your mood. While a tall glass of water is the best way to promote water intake, there are actually plenty other alternative foods and beverages you can incorporate into your diet as well.

Food items such as cucumbers, watermelon, strawberries, smoothies, coconut water, iced tea, salads, and even carrots all have high water. So don’t worry about how you’re going to balance those 6-8 cups of water in between your cocktails. Grab and salad and an apple and eat your water instead!
