On His 40th Birthday: 7 Reasons To Love Colin Farrell

By Jaclyn Lindsay

Today marks Colin Farrell’s 40th birthday. As a fellow Irish person – and self-confessed fan of his –  I thought it was only fair to pay tribute to him.

The Dublin-born actor has been no stranger to the headlines in the past, with his various addictions to drugs, booze, and women. But in recent years, he has nearly disappeared from gossip columns completely, opting instead for a more private life, all the while, still maintaining his reputation as a respected actor.

It’s easy to overlook someone who isn’t constantly being talked about by gossip bloggers, but that doesn’t mean we should.

Here are 7 reasons why Colin Farrell is more than worthy of our love and appreciation:

He’s a talented actor

Colin has produced incredible performances over the years, some of which were widely recognized, like his work in Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, and others that have fallen under the radar, like A New York Winter’s Tale. He doesn’t choose his roles based solely on whether they’ll be the biggest blockbuster hits or make the most money. Rather, he selects scripts he genuinely enjoys reading. His love of acting trumps his desire for fame and wealth.

He’s a great father

Colin has often spoken about his two sons and how they’ve changed his life for the better. He has even noted that he spent more than 4 years as a single man because he was concentrating solely on them. Swoon.

He does his bit for charity

Colin supports several charities, including Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics (a charity close to his heart, as his eldest son James has the rare genetic disorder, characterized by intellectual and developmental delay), UNICEF and The World Food Programme, amongst many others. He has repeatedly spoken out in support of LGBT rights, and stands against human trafficking and poverty.

He doesn’t take himself too seriously

It’s no secret that his 2004 film, Alexander, was a box office flop, and Colin has lightheartedly laughed about it during several interviews. He comes across as down-to-earth and he’s refreshingly honest about his shortcomings and troubled past.

He turned his life around

Colin was on a downhill spiral when, in December 2005, he checked himself into a rehab facility for his addiction to drugs and painkillers. He has since talked openly about his addictions and has managed to change his habits for the better, naming his children as the inspiration to turn his life around. He is now clean of alcohol and drugs, and regularly practices yoga to maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle.

He looks for kindness in a woman

As a Hollywood actor, Colin could have (and might I add, has had) a beautiful model on his arm. But he says that he looks for what a woman has going on underneath the surface over how she looks, telling Hello! Magazine, “I will say that as I get older and calmer and quieter in my own self, the one quality in a woman that I find more and more attractive is kindness. That’s probably the most boring answer to a question that has ever been given, but it’s what I really feel.” Hardly boring. I’d say that’s admirable.

He’s beautiful

Need I say more? You cannot deny the man’s sheer beauty. He frequently makes lists featuring the world’s most attractive men, and while that may not be reason alone to like him, it’s certainly a reason to like looking at him.
