Our Favorite Disney Channel Original Movies

Disney

By De and Kate

Former Disney channel star and current member of Taylor Swift’s squad, Selena Gomez, turns 24 today. Since our love for celeb culture started young with boy bands, our first Teen People magazine subscription, and Disney Channel Original Movies that eventually starred the birthday girl herself, we figured it’s only appropriate to celebrate with a roundup of our all-time favorite DCOMs. Permission granted to take a break from whatever political piece you’re reading or more important task you’re completing and join us on this quick stroll down memory lane.

ZENON: GIRL OF THE 21st CENTURY

Zenon

IMDb gives this one a 6.4/10 rating, but if it were up to our 13 year selves, you can bet the reviews would be raving. Not only did we love its Sci-Fi storyline, we were obsessed with the fashion and hairstyles featured.

HALLOWEENTOWN

Halloweentown

TBH, we’d probably still watch a double feature of this and Hocus Pocus come October 31st. And considering it’s had three sequels since it’s 1998 premiere, we’ll wager to say we’re not the only ones who love(d) it.

MOTOCROSSED

This movie was like a freakin’ Shakespearean comedy. Girl poses as twin brother to race motorcycles? Like, what genius invented this plot? We loved it, and it definitely made us want to ride, if only for a little while.

THE EVEN STEVENS MOVIE

Ren-Mean-Louis-Even-Stevens

K, the movie wasn’t nearly as good as the series but still. This was before Shia LaBeouf was the Shia LaBeouf we know him to be today. Also, we all had friend-crushes on Ren.

BRINK!

Idk, this might have been the reason we all had secret crushes on skater boys in high school. Or at least was the reason why we loved the song “Sk8er Boi.”

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL

No Disney Channel movie list would be complete without the OG Wildcats. This movie solidified our love for Zac Efron and made us all want to be Sharpay.

CADET KELLY

Cadet Kelly

While this was hardly Lizzie McGuire stature, it still starred Hilary Duff. Therefore, we still had to watch.

THE CHEETAH GIRLS

After watching this movie, we wanted to start an all-girl group with our friends. We were basically ready to put out our first record.

ALLEY CATS STRIKE

Alley Cats

We’re not sure about you, but growing up, our local bowling alley smelled like a mixture of heavy smoke, sweaty feet, and fried food. So to say that we wished we could bowl at the film’s trendy (read: sanitized) and retro hangout alongside Kaley Cuoco is an understatement.

WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE: THE MOVIE

Considering this whole list is in honor of Selena Gomez’s birthday, it seems essential that we end the list with a Selena Gomez classic. Between Alex Russo and Harry Potter, it makes sense why we all wanted to be teenage wizards when we were younger.
