An Open Letter To Bernie-or-Bust’ers

Dear Bernie Supporters,

I know you’re frustrated. I know you’re fed up. I know you want a revolution. I understand, and I agree with you. The election system is broken, and it is something we desperately need to fix.

It isn’t a secret that I’ve been a Hillary supporter since day one, but I’ve also been impressed by the Bernie revolution. I’ve been intrigued by his values, by his vision, by his passionate following. But the thing about revolutions is that, in order to work, they require the right timing. And in this case, the timing is all wrong. This is not your time.

We’ve got bigger, orange-haired fish to fry.

Which puts you in a rather difficult position. Who do you vote for in this scenario? Where do you go from here?

So, from one Democrat to another, here’s my pitch about why you should cast your vote for Hillary in November:

Instead of coming to terms with the fact that you are voting for Hillary Clinton, come to terms with the fact that you are voting AGAINST Donald Trump, even if that means you have to vote for Hillary in the process.

You say you want to vote with your morals? Vote against the man who calls Mexicans racists, who objectifies women, who mocks the disabled, who publicly praises dictators.

You say you want to vote with your conscience? Vote against the man who spreads anti-Muslim rhetoric, who advocates for torture and war crimes, who is publicly endorsed by North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un.

You say you want a revolution? Well, you’re in one. It might not be the one you wanted, but this is the biggest political upheaval we’ve had in recent history.  This is our revolution. It’s here; it’s happening right now. This is where we get to decide, with our votes, what kind of country we want to be, what kind of nation we want to be known for.

I know that you equate voting for Hillary with supporting the establishment. I know it feels like you are betraying your values.

But honestly? You don’t have any other options. If you vote independent or don’t vote at all, you are taking a gamble. You’re willing to take the risk that Trump might win. You’re putting your personal values ahead of the wellbeing of the country.

Like it or not, you have to choose. You are not exempt from this vote because you don’t have a candidate you respect.

I’m asking you to do the hard thing, to do the right thing. I’m asking you to put your pride aside and vote for Hillary. I’m not asking you to abandon your beliefs. I’m asking you to do both: to find it within yourself to vote for Hillary AND still believe the system is rigged. To vote for Hillary AND still fight for social change. To vote for Hillary AND still advocate on Bernie’s behalf. It doesn’t have to be one or the other. You can do both. Please do both.

This is bigger than you and it’s bigger than me, and right now it’s bigger than your political revolution.

Nothing is more important than making sure Donald Trump is not our next president.

I ask you to join me in making sure that doesn’t happen. I ask you to show up, to support the Democratic Party, to make a sacrifice for the greater good. It could make all the difference.
