Essential oils are truly the best. There are a wide variety of kinds that can be used topically, ingested, or can even serve as a nice replacement for a candle. They have a multitude of purposes in life. However, essential oils also contain very strong properties. That is why they should always be diluted. A little goes a long way when using them. While I believe that all are essential, some have more health benefits than others.
Here are the 5 oils that I use most often:
Personally, Lavender is my favorite and most frequently used essential oil. I put a few drops in my humidifier before I go to bed because lavender is known to help induce sleep. You can dilute it and spray it on your pillows for a direct effect. The scent is really calming and can be used to help treat anxiety and stress. It can also be added to a tonic and put on the temples to help ease headaches. It really is beneficial if you’re looking for a natural pain remedy.
Eucalyptus oil is absolutely essential to aromatherapy. It’s a known decongestant and helps with asthmatics as well. This is because the aroma and vapors allow more air to get into the lungs. Eucalyptus is also a great antiseptic. It helps treat and soothe wounds while also keeping the bacteria out. So for small cuts and burns you can just apply a little. Always remember, it’s best to dilute and to seek medical attention for more serious injuries.
Tea tree oil is super pungent and definitely not my favorite smelling oil but the uses are wide ranging and quite impressive. First of all, it can be applied if you have problems with dandruff. It’s great for the scalp and helps to moisturize and increase blood flow to the follicles. Even more impressive, tea tree oil has antiviral properties. And as viruses cannot typically be treated with antibiotics, it’s always good to have nature on your side. It’s commonly used to treat things like the flu and measles.
This is another essential oil with a very strong smell that you either love or hate. But, if you’re looking for a natural anti-aging regimen you may want to add frankincense oil to your list. It’s a natural astringent so it’s very good for the skin and can help to reduce wrinkles. Overall, it strengthens your skin and muscles. It’s also a great remedy if you’re trying to get rid of scars and can even be used if you suffer from heartburn and don’t want to take an antacid. It helps with digestion and doesn’t have any known side effects.
Next to lavender, peppermint is one of my favorite smelling essential oils. It’s a really crisp, fresh, and enjoyable scent throughout the day. Peppermint also has antifungal properties and can help treat a variety of fungus. It’s great for nail health for this reason as well. Sometimes, if you have one too many pedicures a fungus can arise and simply diluting peppermint oil and applying it topically can help a lot. Peppermint oil is a great antiseptic, hence why it’s used in many mouthwashes. You can use peppermint oil by itself and it helps with gum health, keeping bacteria out of your mouth so your breath stays minty fresh.
