We’re slowly and surely inching our way to warm weather and all our favorite outdoor activities that accompany it. But, until then, we know that we’ll likely experience a winter storm or two before the season officially makes her way to our rearview mirror. Rather than mightily resist or grudgingly endure those days dictated by Mother Nature, we’re rounding up 6 ways to actually enjoy being snowed in at home.
Watch a TED Talk
Thanks to the internet, you no longer have to physically attend a conference to reap the beneficial takeaways of it. We love watching and learning from the creative insight of some of our favorite thinkers like Brené Brown and Elizabeth Gilbert. Their quick 20-minute talks spark just the inspiration we crave, especially during the cold, dark winter months.
Organize
There’s something strangely satisfying about decluttering and creating a sense of order amongst our things. If you’re anything like us, you’ve got a junk drawer (or 5), closet, cabinet, or desk that you’ve been meaning to clear out for longer than you’d care to admit. Use being home with nowhere to safely go as your incentive to finally get around to systemizing, storing, lightening up and tossing out the junk. Jumping into the mess may not be instantly enjoyable, but the feeling of organization afterwards certainly is.
Plan your next trip
If you’re feeling major cabin fever, start envisioning, researching, and booking a day trip, weekend getaway, or vacation. It doesn’t have to be something or somewhere that breaks the bank, maybe it’s simply looking up local attractions that you’ve never explored. That way, once the weather is nice enough to enjoy (without 6 layers of clothing), you’ll be ready to go, with your excursions already mapped out.
Do something you’ve never done
See what ingredients you have on hand and make dessert in a mug, stream a new series, read the book that’s been sitting unopened on your nightstand for 2 months (or maybe that’s just us), write a letter to yourself to open in 10 years, watch a documentary, do something you’ve always wanted to do, or learn about something that’s always peaked your interest. With nowhere else to go, there really is no time like the present.
Get outdoors
If you can’t beat them, join them. Bundle up and brave the elements. Be a kid again and create snow angels or stroll through the white powdered side streets and enjoy the silence and nature surrounding you. Allow the brisk air to cool your cheeks knowing that’ll only make the hot cocoa awaiting you once you’re home even better.
Declare it a game day
Grab a deck of cards or your favorite board game and play on. Similar to making snow angels, unplugging for a bit and engaging in a lighthearted competition cues nostalgia in the best kind of way. Whether you’re spending the day solo, with a roommate, or with your S.O., we’ve got you covered with 10 of our favorite games.
Tell Us: What’s your favorite way to spend a snow day?

This was just what I needed! I am ready for spring but Mother Nature has other plans. I live in the Pacific Northwest and yesterday it snowed all day and then it rained all day today. Tomorrow is supposed to be a mix. I needed some suggestions on how to keep kids and myself occupied especially on school “snow days”. Thank you.

The last time I had a snow day, I queued up some good podcasts and did a puzzle.

My favorite way to spend a snow day is lots of sleep. Also a comfortable couch and a warm blanket with a Netflix account. Thanks for the post.

Great list! I’ll definitely try some of these; Lord knows we have enough snow to try them all! Haha!
