10 Tips to Surviving March Madness When Your Partner Is Totally Obsessed

March Madness

By Jillian Stacia

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for basketball fans. But if you struggle to sit through a game without yawning, it can be a painful experience – especially when you live with someone who is a total fanatic.

Believe it or not, it is possible to make it through March Madness without going crazy. In fact, you may even learn to enjoy yourself! These tips will help show you the way:

1. Fake it till you make it: This isn’t a tip as much as it is a general mindset. Look, I know watching basketball might not be your jam. But it makes your partner happy. And they will be even happier when they see that you’re trying to get on board. Plus, having a good attitude makes the whole experience much more enjoyable. There’s no way around it: the next two weeks are going to revolve around basketball. You might as well make it as fun as possible.

2. Fill out a bracket: This is the key to enjoying March Madness– it’s what makes it’s so fun! You don’t have to know anything about college basketball to fill out a bracket. Just pick a team. Follow the rankings. Choose a team based on their name or their colors of their mascots. Having teams to cheer for is part of the fun!

3. Have people over: March Madness is a great excuse to hang out with friends and family. Invite people over for some of the games and have a basketball themed party!

4. Snacks on snacks on snacks: Calories don’t count during March Madness. Get creative in the kitchen and come up with the ultimate junk food. I highly recommend this peanut butter dip for anyone with a sweet tooth.

5. Commit to one specific team: Does your partner have a specific team that they love? Make sure to actively watch those games and pay attention. Have fun, cheer, get involved. But during the other ten thousand games they insist on watching, feel free to do something else to preserve your sanity.

6. Nap: Basketball naps are the holy grail of naps. There is literally nothing better than falling asleep on the couch with basketball on in the background. It’s the perfect excuse to be lazy. Get in your jammies, make some tea and spend the afternoon napping in front of the TV. Pure bliss, I tell you.

7. Schedule fun activities around the games: Contrary to popular belief, there are breaks in March Madness. Take advantage of them and do something meaningful with your partner. It’ll give you a chance to reconnect and regroup before the next round of games.

8. Find ways to entertain yourself: When I’ve hit my basketball quota for the evening, I pick up a good book. Sometimes I’ll get on the computer or work on tackle a creative project. This is a great time to knock a few things off your to-do list! (Pssst, if you’re looking for a good read, check out Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty).

9. Go out to a restaurant/bar: A change of scenery will do you good. It’s nice to remember that there’s a world outside of basketball. Plus, crowd mentality makes everything better.

10. Remember- this only happens once a year: Try to enjoy it!
