8 Simple Ways To Unwind This Winter.jpg

Tired of trudging to work in the cold? Already stressed out about the new semester? Still recovering from the holidays? Life can be frustrating and our dreams take a lot of work but it is healthy for us to take some time, every once in a while, to unwind and refocus. Not sure where to start? Then here are a few suggestions!

Get moving

Go for a walk in your neighborhood or on a nature trail at the park. Find a yoga video on YouTube and try some new moves. Walk a mile on the treadmill at the gym while listening to a podcast or book. Turn on your favorite tunes and have a dance party for one. Whatever your preference – just get moving!

Get lost in a book

Make yourself a nest on the couch with pillows and blankets, put your phone on vibrate, and get lost in a good book. Desperately wanting to travel? Read a book that takes place in your favorite destination. Prefer some intrigue? Start a mystery and see if you can solve it before the main character does. If you’re unsure what to read, most public library systems have recommendation lists on their websites. You can also check out apps such as Goodreads and BookBub.

Have a Netflix Marathon

Everyone understands the appeal of just zoning out on the couch as you hit “next” on your current binge-watch. Watch that documentary that’s been in your queue for months. Be adventurous and watch the first episode of a TV show you’ve never seen. Re-watch a favorite movie and see how many lines you can remember. Drool over a foodie show like Netflix’s new Somebody Feed Phil.

Pamper yourself

Take an extra-long shower or bath. Try out the bubble bath or facial mask that’s been shoved to the back of the cabinet that you’ve been meaning to use forever. Paint your toenails and fingernails with your favorite color. Go to your favorite beauty supply store and buy the hair treatment or hand scrub that you’ve always wanted to try.

Get Crafty

Pull out an art pad and markers or coloring book and crayons and get creative! Visit your local craft store and see what project strikes your fancy. If you don’t want anything too involved then visit the dollar bins and clearance sections. Paint-by-number anyone?

Satiate your sweet tooth

Bake cookies or brownies and share them at work the next day – after you’ve taste-tested them, of course. Wander through Pinterest and find a dessert recipe you’d like to try. Nothing like the smell of fresh-baked sweets to put a smile on your face.

Organize and clean

There is a unique portion of the population who finds relaxation in cleaning or “nesting.” If you’re one of them then pick a closet or series of kitchen drawers to go through. Clean the cobwebs out of the ceiling corners and vacuum under your furniture. Turn on your favorite TV show and start folding the laundry that has been growing on your couch.

When in doubt, take a nap

If you aren’t sure you have the energy for any of the other suggestions then close the curtains, burrow under the covers, and take a nap. Hibernating isn’t just for bears.
