Our first baby was born in March of last year and we are currently 2 months pregnant with baby number two. We are overjoyed to be adding another member to our family and we are excited to be walking this journey again. I was happy when I saw that second line on the test and it has been fun to dream about how the kids will play together. But I’m going to be honest, it is scary. I’m in a lot of fear, more than I thought I would be my second time around. Although, I’m not really afraid of pains and tugs, what labor will feel like, and if I’ll be able to handle newborn poop and running on basically no sleep. It begins, appropriately enough, with pregnancy: the need to do everything — and I mean everything — to perfection. Drink enough water. Exercise, but not too much. Eat healthy foods, but watch out for ones that are dangerous. Get the nursery ready, but don’t over-exert yourself. “Sleep while you can,” but not on your back. Prepare as much as possible, but know that some things are out of your control.
That lack of control, that constant mystery, that’s what’s so difficult when striving to be as perfect as possible. You can have all the information, and yet, you don’t really know what’s happening inside your body, not until the baby is born and it’s all over.

From the very first weeks of my daughter’s life, I became somewhat obsessed with understanding baby sleep. I must have googled “baby sleep schedules” at least 100 times since she’s been born, and I’ll admit: I still don’t have it completely right. Part of the issue, of course, is that babies are constantly changing, so what works one week doesn’t necessarily work the next. However, at the time I’ve written this post, she’s 4.5 months, taking consistent 3-4 naps throughout the day, and — for the most part — sleeping through the night. Having a baby is a life-changing experience. It was simultaneously the hardest and greatest thing I’ve ever done. Before I gave birth to my son, I had pictured the experience so many times. I read books, talked with friends, watched documentaries. I thought I knew exactly what to expect.

I’ve spent so many January 1st afternoons frustrated with myself. Because I already ate the row of brownies I vowed not to indulge in, or I lost the patience I promised I’d keep, or I skipped the morning meditation I resolved to stick to for 365 days. Less than 24 hours in, I’d already lost. Declared myself imperfect. Taken the inflated anticipation of a new year – a sparkling clean slate – and watched and felt as all its hope and all my eagerness slowly dwindled down to disappointment.
