Instagram, Real Life, and The In-Between

By De Elizabeth

Earlier this week, a friend told me that my life seemed “amazing” through Instagram, and my first instinct was to laugh. Hard.

I read her message after I had just finished cleaning a stack of dishes that had piled in the sink. Prior to that, I had picked up no less than thirty toys strewn across my living room floor, knowing full well that the room would once again be a mess just a few minutes later. My hair was unwashed, thrown up in a messy half-bun, and my eye makeup was rubbed off from crying earlier over a reason I can no longer recall. Untouched on my desk was a to-do list I’d written earlier in the day when I was feeling more motivated, when I thought I might actually accomplish something productive that afternoon.

But sure, on Instagram, everything looks different.

Instagram is arguably the best/worst time sucking app to ever exist. One minute, you’re looking at a pic of your bff, Jill’s daily gingerbread latte addiction, and then *suddenly* (38 minutes later) you’ve managed to scroll through the accounts of every contestant from season 17 of The Bachelor. While we’re in no way claiming for it to be the most productive way to pass time, it is entertaining and the right account can provide just the comedic therapy we all need a little more of in 2017.

With that, we bring you 15 posts that made us laugh loud enough for the person in front of us at the self-checkout aisle to look back with bewilderment: Continue reading

We Need to Stop Celebrating Mediocre Men

Recently an Instagram post  by author Robbie Tripp went viral. It was a post about his love for his wife, despite her larger figure.

People were immediately drawn to the post, and congratulated Tripp on being so outspoken about his acceptance and adoration of larger bodies. Comments such as “I wish I could find a man like you” and “You are so inspiring” flooded his Instagram. BuzzFeed and HuffPost ran stories depicting the so-called insane level of cuteness.

And yeah, it’s always nice to see someone profess their adoration for their partner. Who doesn’t love love? But the reality is, there are MANY things wrong with Tripp’s post including his narrow definition of feminism, his ironic tendency to praise one body type over another, and his seemingly #humblebrag that he deserves a trophy for loving his curvy wife. For National Day Of Unplugging: Consider Being Mindfully Plugged-In

National Unplugged Day
Social media has undoubtedly become one of our generation’s biggest love/hate and most talked about relationships. We have memes poking fun at our inability to hold a conversation face-to-face because we’re too busy staring at our screens and texting our friends from across the room. And we’re surrounded by articles, posts, and videos discussing our levels of connection – or lack there of – due in large part to the role technology plays in our lives. Ironically enough, so many of the sources we see calling for us to put our phones down and look up at the world around us use the very means they’re demoting to advertise their message. Simply put, social media and our intertwined connection to it has become somewhat of a catch 22.
