Standing in the middle of a path lined with wild flowers with the sun blazing unforgiving on my face I took the deepest breath of my life. I inhaled pine and palm, sky and lake. I concentrated on the beads of sweat dripping into the small of my back and acknowledged the pain in my right calf after too many fractures and Achilles ruptures.
I gave thanks to my body for surviving me. I gave thanks to my mind for surviving me. I gave thanks that I was able to stand in this place, at this time and take in that deep breath and I exhaled and forgave myself for the last year, for my failures, for everything I put myself through, because I seem so fundamentally broken at times. After moving twice in 2 years, simplification is something I value more than I ever thought I would. Considering we’ve added an infant to our household, making room for his many toys, jumpers, mats and swings became a high priority for us. On my wedding day, I set the intention to savor all the moments throughout the celebration. I’d been warned by many wise married women before me just how quickly the whole shebang goes. I’d watched Father of the Bride approximately 48 times and witnessed with my own eyes what a blur it could be to race from getting ready to the ceremony and through the reception. I knew that I’d better take a full roll of mental snapshots so I didn’t look back feeling as though I’d missed it.
I wanted to remember the giddy champagne infused excitement of curling hair and putting on makeup with my bridesmaids, the look on my husband’s face as I walked down the aisle, the all-the-feels emotions I experienced as I danced with my dad, and the heartfelt humor expressed through dinner toasts. Recently, my partner and I went on a two night camping trip with our dogs. The second morning, I was lying on a picnic table, looking up at the trees, and pondering the irony that this place was a beautiful spot to meditate, but I hadn’t stopped to meditate once. Letting out a wistful sigh, I commented as such to my partner.
“You’ve been on vacation relaxing, I think you’ll be fine,” he responded.
Looking back on it now, his response doesn’t seem that absurd. He’s seen me meditating, and since we hadn’t talked about it, how would he know that within my quiet outward appearance, my mind is always a swirling war of distraction. But in the moment, I was very confused because his response didn’t make any sense. To me, relaxation and meditation are barely related. They’re more like distant cousins who occasionally see each other at Thanksgiving dinner. After a few moments of staring at him in confusion, my mind landed on the stunning conclusion: He has no idea why I meditate. Continue reading
Whoever makes up the seemingly random holidays and monthly honorings has designated May Meditation Month. I am not going to ask too many questions about the how or why, but I’m going to go with it as an excellent excuse to encourage people to get off their butt and get motivated to put that butt right back down onto the meditation cushion.
It’s pretty hard to escape the moment that Mindfulness is having in our popular culture now. Despite its practice for thousands of years without catching on with the mainstream, it seems Mindfulness has finally gotten the right agent and celebrity backers. That was the cue my yoga instructor called, prompting me to get curious about what was happening physically as I transitioned into Warrior 2. I softened the space between my eyes and unclenched my jaw. I relaxed my shoulders away from my ears and made the conscious effort to deepen my breath.
